Heads up! The truly fastest way to get bitcoins is to buy The Advanced Beginner’s Guide to Bitcoin. You’ll learn everything you need to know to get started in the world of Bitcoin, and you’ll receive $5 worth of bitcoins with your purchase.
For those just getting into Bitcoin, the first step is the hardest - how to buy bitcoins. The Beginner’s Guide to Bitcoin explains that you have to make a choice when buying bitcoins. You can buy bitcoins quickly, you can buy bitcoins cheaply, or you can buy bitcoins anonymously - and you only get to choose one of those options.
If you decide that you have to get your hands on bitcoins as soon as possible, you have a few options (and with the way the exchange rate is going, I completely understand). However, be prepared to pay a heavy markup.
Buying With a Credit Card
There’s only one well established site that will sell you bitcoins directly using your credit card - btcQuick. To use it, you’ll need to first purchase a “membership” and upload a photo ID. Membership is $0.99 and is, basically, just a way for btcQuick to weed out scammers before they purchase bitcoins.
You’ll be limited to buying two bitcoins at a time with btcQuick, but that limit goes up as you purchase more. You’ll also pay 7.5% above the Mt. Goxprice, and an additional $0.30 transaction fee.
Buying with Cash
If you’re willing to step away from your computer, you can use cash to buy bitcoins through Ziggap (directly) or BitInstant (by sending your money to an exchange).
You can use BitInstant to send money to either a Mt. Gox or Bitstampaccount (if you’re unfamiliar, Mt. Gox and Bitstamp are the two largest Bitcoin currency exchange sites). BitInstant lets you pay at most Walmart, CVS, and 7-11 locations, as well as locations at other stores.
BitInstant charges a 3.99% fee for their service, and after you get it to an exchange you’ll pay their fee as well when you make your bitcoin purchases (0.6% for Mt. Gox or 0.5% for BitStamp). Transferring your money to the accounts happens in an under an hour.
Ziggap lets you use cash to buy bitcoins directly, without having to go through an exchange. You can take your cash to the same locations as you can with BitInstant (they both use the same intermediary service). After the money is sent, bitcoins are sent directly to the Bitcoin address you registered with Ziggap.
Ziggap charges 5.49% above the Mt. Gox price. The transfer of bitcoins usually happens just a few minutes after your order is sent.
Comparing Your Options
Which method is best for you depends on which of these is more important to you:
Speed - Ziggap, assuming you live near a deposit location.
Convenience - btcQuick, because you don’t have to leave your computer.
Price - BitInstant, because they have the lowest fee.
